Wishing Wells

Wishing wells are a rising trend in weddings. In addition to or in lieu of presents, elaborate, decorative wishing wells are stationed at the reception site. Some couples prefer to use bird cages instead of wishing wells, but the concept is the same. Guests bring greeting cards and monetary gifts to place within the well or cage. This tradition is becoming popular as more couples choose to live together before marriage. The traditional housewarming gifts have often been purchased long before vows are exchanged. Money from wishing wells is usually used for home improvements or honeymoons.

While money may be the most practical gift to receive on your wedding day, you should be aware that some guests find the request for cash improper etiquette. Many wedding-goers prefer to purchase traditional gifts, and may feel that it is tacky for you to deny them the opportunity to do so. For this reason, finding the best way to mention the wishing well or birdcage is important.

Typically, no information regarding gifts should be included in a wedding invitation. The proper way to inform guests of the wishing well is through your bridesmaids. If a bridal shower is to be planned by your wedding party, registry information and wishing well preferences can be included with shower invitations. Usually, your bridesmaids will ask ahead of time about your preferences, so they can inform your guests. It is desirable to have the wishing well introduced by the wedding party. For example:

Steven and Becca have all their house wares

From linens and silver to tables and chairs.

So now, for their wedding we’d like to provide

A honeymoon savings to please groom and bride.

The bridesmaids and groomsmen will set up for guests

A well for your blessings, donations and bests.

It is important not to tell your guests that their presents are unwelcome. The wedding gift wording included in a shower invitation should encourage guests to choose which present they are most comfortable giving.

If you thought about gifting to help the couple on their way,

A gift of cash towards their home repairs would really make their day.

If you prefer to bless them with gifts the traditional way,

Feel free to bring your own special surprise to our wedding soiree.
